This holiday takes place during Ramadan, which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and a time when Muslims across the world will fast during the hours of daylight. Although guided by the moon, it is expected to take place between May 13 and June 14. Westerners are not expected to obey by the fasting rules, but it is polite to adhere to local customs where possible, by dressing conservatively in public places and not eating, smoking or drinking in public during daylight. Most hotels and resorts operate as usual, malls in Dubai have extended their opening hours to about 1am, with restaurants staying open until 2am. Nightclubs and live music events arr closed.
